Liebherr Introduces “VarioBase+” Augmented Reality Stability Envelope for LTM 1650-8.1 Mobile Cranes

Sep 17, 2026

Liebherr has launched the "VarioBase+" intelligent stability system for its LTM 1650-8.1 700-ton 8-axle mobile crane. In dense urban construction, crane outriggers are frequently deployed asymmetrically-one side fully extended on the street while the other is retracted to avoid a subway vent or a building facade. Traditional safety systems calculate a static lifting capacity chart based on the worst-case outrigger position, severely limiting the crane's potential capacity on the extended side.

The VarioBase+ system integrates "Hydraulic Pressure Transducers" into each outrigger cylinder. The engineering innovation is the "Real-Time Load-Vector Trajectory Prediction." The system continuously maps the exact downward force on each of the four outrigger pads. As the operator swings the boom, the system calculates the load's instantaneous center of gravity and projects its future trajectory in a 3D augmented reality display on the operator's screen.

If the operator swings the heavy lift toward the fully extended outrigger side, the system dynamically expands the lifting capacity chart for that specific radius, allowing the lift to proceed. If the operator attempts to swing toward the retracted outrigger, the system continuously calculates the overturning moment. Before the load reaches the critical tipping boundary, the system automatically engages a "Proportional Slew Brake," gently slowing the swing speed to a stop and preventing the crane from exceeding the safe stability envelope. This real-time load mapping increases crane utilization by up to 25% in confined urban configurations.
