JCB has expanded its pioneering 100 percent electric E-TECH range with the 505-20E compact telehandler, the industry's first fully electric telescopic handler designed for zero-emission indoor and urban construction environments. The 505-20E delivers a maximum lift capacity of 5,250 pounds and a maximum lift height of 20 feet, matching the performance envelope of its diesel predecessor, the 505-20, while producing zero exhaust emissions and a 50 percent reduction in operational noise. The machine is powered by a 24-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack with an integrated thermal management system that actively cools the cells during high-draw boom-lifting cycles.
The engineering breakthrough is the "Regenerative Boom-Lowering Circuit." On a traditional diesel telehandler, lowering a 5,000-pound load dissipates the potential energy as heat through the hydraulic metering valve, wasting the energy and generating excessive oil temperature. The 505-20E's boom-lowering circuit routes the hydraulic oil displaced from the rod end of the boom cylinder through a hydraulic-motor-driven generator. As the heavy load descends, the generator converts the potential energy back into electrical energy, returning up to 15 percent of the battery's charge during a full day of lifting and lowering cycles. This regenerative architecture extends the runtime to a full eight-hour shift on a single charge, even in heavy-load applications.
Furthermore, the electric drive eliminates the turbocharger lag inherent in diesel engines. The permanent-magnet traction motor delivers 100 percent of its rated torque in 50 milliseconds, compared to the 1.5-second spool-up time of a diesel turbocharger. This instant torque-fill allows the telehandler to accelerate smoothly up a ramp with a full load without the momentary hesitation that previously caused the machine to stall and the tires to spin. The regenerative boom circuit and instant torque, combined with the zero-emission operation, make the 505-20E the first telehandler suitable for continuous indoor operation in enclosed warehouses and food-processing facilities, where diesel exhaust and noise have historically prohibited telehandler deployment.
