Konecranes has introduced the "Twist-Verify" system for its Boxhandler reach stackers. In busy intermodal rail yards and seaports, operators must engage the twist-locks of 40-ton shipping containers stacked 5-high. Visibility is frequently compromised by fog, rain, and darkness. If the operator lowers the spreader and the twist-locks are misaligned with the container's corner castings, the massive hydraulic down-pressure of the spreader can shear off the lock housings or dent the container roof.
The Twist-Verify system integrates "Miniature Laser Profiling Sensors" into each of the four twist-lock housings on the spreader head. The engineering breakthrough is the "Real-Time Castin Alignment." As the spreader descends toward the container, the lasers project a precise contour map of the corner castings. The ECU analyzes the distance and lateral offset of each of the four corners simultaneously.
If the spreader is tilted or laterally misaligned by more than 20 millimeters, the system automatically halts the descent hydraulic circuit, preventing the physical collision of the locks. The ECU then commands the spreader's hydraulic yaw and side-shift cylinders to micro-adjust the spreader's position in 3D space, perfectly aligning all four twist-locks with the container castings. Only when all four lasers confirm a positive geometric match does the system allow the descent to continue and the locks to engage. This automated 3D verification eliminates blind-container structural damage and reduces twist-lock replacement costs by 90%.
