Toyota Advanced Logistics (BT) has introduced the "Aisle-Light" navigation system for its R2000 series high-level order pickers. In large distribution centers, selective pallet racking often suffers from "variable pitch"-upright frames are occasionally struck by forklifts and bent inward by a few centimeters over years of use. Traditional order pickers rely on wire-guidance systems in the floor and rigid rail-sensing to follow the aisle, but they do not detect inward-bent rack frames at the 9-meter level. Operators picking at height frequently strike bent uprights, causing catastrophic pallet drops.
The Aisle-Light system replaces physical wire guidance with a "Targetless Rack-Profiling Laser" mounted on the picker's fork carriage. The engineering breakthrough is the "Dynamic Path Offset" algorithm. As the picker elevates and travels down the aisle, the laser continuously scans the horizontal load beams and vertical uprights. If it detects an upright that is bent inward by 30 millimeters at the 8-meter height, the ECU commands the rear steer motor to micro-shift the entire truck chassis laterally by 30 millimeters at the floor level, maintaining a safe, parallel distance from the distorted rack without the operator touching the steering wheel.
Furthermore, the system features "Automatic Ceiling-Clearance Sensing." Using an upward-angled laser, the system measures the distance to the warehouse roof structure. If the operator elevates the platform too close to the ceiling joists, the system halts the hoist motor and alerts the operator, preventing structural damage to the building and the machine. This laser-guided navigation eliminates rack-impact damage by 90% and removes the costly installation of floor wires for new warehouse builds.
