Komatsu has rolled out the "RipSense" intelligent ripper management system for its D85EX-18 crawler dozers. In subgrade preparation and hard-pan scarification, the multi-shank ripper is the most abused implement on the machine. Operators pulling heavy rock often set a fixed shank depth and angle, then drive. If the ripper tooth strikes a buried unyielding granite seam, the sudden torque spike snaps the expensive ripper tooth or stalls the engine, while excessive down-pressure in softer strata wastes fuel and bends the shank.
The RipSense system integrates "Strain-Gauge Torque Sensors" into the ripper link arms and a "Hydraulic Shank Angle Cylinder" at the ripper pivot point. The engineering innovation is the "Closed-Loop Penetration Modulation." The torque sensors measure the exact bending moment on the shank 100 times per second. If the system detects a sudden torque spike indicating the tooth has hit hard bedrock, the ECU instantly commands the shank angle cylinder to pitch the tooth backward by 5 degrees, allowing it to ride up and over the hard seam rather than gouging into it.
Conversely, if the torque reading drops (indicating soft soil), the system increases the down-pressure and pitches the tooth forward to maximize penetration depth. This dynamic angle modulation ensures the ripper is always working at its optimal cutting resistance, reducing tooth breakage by 40% and lowering engine fuel consumption during scarification by 12%.
