Volvo Construction Equipment has integrated the "Active-Roll" intelligent suspension system into its 2026 production line of A45G 45-ton articulated dump trucks (ADTs). In off-highway mining and quarrying, ADTs frequently navigate uneven, rutted haul roads while carrying maximum payloads. When the truck begins to tip its load on a cross-slope or uneven dumping pad, the center of gravity shifts drastically outboard. Traditional rigid walking beam suspensions cannot compensate for this, leading to a high risk of trailer roll-over and devastating equipment damage.
The Active-Roll system replaces the standard independent suspension struts with an "Interconnected Hydraulic Damper (IHD) Network." The engineering breakthrough is the "Dynamic Lateral Cross-Feed Valve." Using real-time data from chassis-mounted inclinometers and a payload mass sensor integrated into the trailer bowl, the ECU calculates the truck's dynamic center of gravity 50 times per second. If the system detects that the trailer is leaning more than 4 degrees during a dump cycle, the cross-feed valve instantly transfers high-pressure hydraulic oil from the outside (downhill) suspension struts to the inside (uphill) struts. This actively pushes the trailer body back toward a level attitude, counteracting the lateral force of the shifting dirt.
Furthermore, the system features "Preemptive Dump Lockout." If the truck arrives at a dumping zone and the radar-based ground scanners detect a slope exceeding the safe tipping threshold (even before the bowl is raised), the system locks the hoist cylinder and flashes a "Reposition Required" warning in the cab. This active leveling and anti-roll architecture increases ADT operational safety in marginal terrain by 40% and allows operators to safely dump on grades up to 7 degrees, eliminating the need to constantly grade perfect dumping pads.
