Komatsu Introduces “Grade-Link” Active Blade-Stall Control for D85EX-18 Dozers

Sep 03, 2026

Komatsu has rolled out the "Grade-Link" active blade management system for its D85EX-18 crawler dozers. In heavy earthmoving, operators pushing heavy loads of sticky clay or dense fill often experience "blade stall"-the dozer blade digs in too deeply, the load resistance spikes instantly, the engine RPM drops below peak torque, and the tracks begin to spin. Recovering from a stall requires reversing the machine and re-attacking the cut, costing precious cycle time.

The Grade-Link system integrates a "Blade-Mounted Ground-Pressure Radar" with the engine's ECU. The engineering breakthrough is the "Predictive Load Sensing" logic. Instead of reacting to engine RPM drop (which is already too late), the ground-pressure radar monitors the density and resistance of the material entering the blade. If the radar detects a sudden spike in material density ahead of the cutting edge, the ECU preemptively commands the blade lift cylinders to raise the cutting edge by 2 to 5 millimeters in milliseconds.

This micro-adjustment sheds the excess load just before it can bog the engine down, keeping the engine operating at peak torque and preventing track slippage. Additionally, the system features "Auto-Pitch Crowd." When pushing a heavy load up a grade, the system automatically pitches the blade forward to roll the material, reducing drag. This predictive torque management increases the dozer's pushing efficiency by 18% and reduces track shoe wear by preventing the high-friction spinning that occurs during stalls.
