Liebherr Releases “Torque-Lock” Intelligent Kelly Bar Protection for LB 36 Rotary Drilling Rigs

Sep 01, 2026

Liebherr has introduced the "Torque-Lock" protection system for its LB 36 series rotary foundation drill rigs. In deep foundation drilling, the Kelly bar (the telescopic drive shaft) transmits massive torque from the rotary table to the drilling bucket. When the bucket encounters an immovable object, such as a large subterranean boulder, the torque spikes instantly. If the operator fails to reverse the rotation in time, the Kelly bar can twist into a corkscrew shape, resulting in a catastrophic and incredibly expensive structural failure.

The Torque-Lock system permanently cures this risk. The engineering innovation is the "Strain Gauge Array" bonded directly to the external surfaces of the telescopic Kelly bar sections. These full-bridge strain gauges measure the microscopic torsional deflection of the steel tube 500 times per second. This data is transmitted to the rig's ECU via a slip-ring assembly on the rotary head.

The controller calculates the actual transmitted torque as a percentage of the Kelly bar's yield strength. The breakthrough is the "Yield-Limit Intervention Logic." If the torque exceeds 85% of the bar's yield limit (indicating an impending plastic deformation), the system does not simply alarm-it actively overrides the operator. It instantly commands the "Proportional Rotary Valve" to reverse the hydraulic motor flow, backing the drilling bucket off the obstruction by a quarter turn to relieve the torsional stress. Simultaneously, the "Active Crowd Control" retracts the Kelly bar by 10 cm to break the bit's mechanical bite into the rock. This autonomous unloading prevents permanent structural damage, extending the Kelly bar's service life indefinitely and eliminating the multi-million-dollar costs associated with bar replacement and downhole fishing operations.
