SANY Heavy Industry has officially launched the "Power-Swap" rapid battery exchange system for its SY215E 20-ton electric excavators. In heavy-duty quarry operations, tethered electric excavators restrict mobility, while standard plug-in charging requires 1 to 2 hours of downtime per shift. SANY's new system allows the entire 423 kWh battery pack to be physically swapped in under 3 minutes using a dedicated semi-automated exchange vehicle, achieving utilization rates comparable to diesel machines.
The engineering breakthrough is the "Chassis-Integrated Drawer Architecture." The battery pack is housed in a reinforced steel cage that slides laterally out of the excavator's counterweight frame. The most complex challenge in high-voltage swapping is aligning the heavy-duty electrical contacts. SANY developed a "Rotary Cam Interlock Mechanism." As the new battery is pushed in, the final 10 mm of travel rotates a cam profile inside the pack. This cam drives the high-voltage copper bus bars into a wiping motion against the chassis contacts, scraping away any oxidation or dust to ensure a perfect low-resistance connection.
Furthermore, the system features "Auto-Docking Liquid Couplers." Because rapid charging and high-current digging generate immense heat, the battery is liquid-cooled. When the battery slides into the chassis, spring-loaded coolant nozzles automatically mate with the excavator's thermal management loop within 2 seconds of the electrical contact, detecting leakage via pressure decay before the main contactor is allowed to close. This integrated mechanical and fluid auto-docking enables continuous 24-hour quarry operations with zero grid-charging downtime.
