Jungheinrich Debuts “Cabin-Shield” Active Crush Protection for ETV 322 Narrow Aisle Trucks

Aug 29, 2026

Jungheinrich has introduced the "Cabin-Shield" active protection system for its ETV 322 series man-up narrow aisle (VNA) forklifts. In high-bay warehouses, VNA trucks elevate the operator with the load to pick or place pallets at heights exceeding 12 meters. The aisle width is often only 1.6 meters. If the operator's cabin drifts too close to the rack upright, or if a pallet overhangs into the aisle, the operator can be crushed between the cabin and the steel rack structure. Traditional systems only sound an alarm, relying on the operator to react and stop the mast.

The Cabin-Shield system is built around a "Vertical Laser Curtain Array" mounted on the leading edge of the operator platform. The engineering innovation is the "Predictive Vector Retraction Logic." The laser array scans a 500 mm wide, 2-meter high envelope in front of the cabin. If the system detects a rigid obstruction (like a protruding pallet edge or a misaligned rack beam) entering the envelope while the mast is moving laterally, the system doesn't just cut the motor power-the system actively reverses the danger.

The controller instantly fires the "Platform Retraction Solenoid." This valve releases hydraulic pressure from the mast side-shift cylinder, forcing the entire cab and fork carriage to mechanically jump backward by 50 mm away from the obstruction. This active retraction occurs in 0.15 seconds, significantly faster than the mechanical inertia of the 5-ton mast assembly could be stopped by braking alone. Furthermore, the system features "Dual Redundant Safety Controllers" (1002D architecture). If one controller misses the obstruction, the secondary controller forces a hard mechanical mast lock. This active crush protection has eliminated platform-impact injuries in pilot installations across 14-meter high-bay facilities.
