Common Faults Of The Travel System And On-Site Maintenance Methods

Apr 01, 2026

The travel system is one of the most heavily loaded components of an excavator. Common faults include weak walking, deviation, abnormal noise, and track slippage, which directly affect construction progress.

Weak walking is usually caused by insufficient pressure in the travel motor or excessive internal leakage. First check whether the hydraulic oil level is normal and whether the filter is blocked. Then test the pressure of the travel main relief valve. If the pressure is insufficient, adjust or replace the relief valve. If the pressure is normal, the travel motor may be worn and needs overhaul.

Excavator deviation during walking is mostly caused by inconsistent speed of the left and right travel motors or uneven track tension. Check whether the two travel motors have oil leakage or blockage. At the same time, check the track tension: too tight or too loose will cause deviation and abnormal wear. Adjust the tension of the crawler to the standard state.

Abnormal noise during walking is often related to the idler, carrier roller, track roller, or driving gear. Check whether these rotating parts are short of oil, worn, or stuck. Add butter regularly and replace worn parts in time.

Daily maintenance should include cleaning the travel mechanism, checking track wear, and lubricating rotating parts, which can effectively extend the service life of the travel system.
