Forklift Maintenance: Mast Lift Slow Or Weak

Mar 31, 2026

Hydraulic System Diagnosis & Practical Fixes

Forklift operators frequently report issues such as slow lifting, weak lifting force, or unstable mast movement, especially under load. These problems are closely related to the hydraulic lifting system and can be resolved through targeted inspection and maintenance.

Step-by-Step Troubleshooting:

Hydraulic Oil Check: Inspect oil level and quality. Low oil level introduces air, causing slow lifting and shaking; dirty or oxidized oil damages pumps and valves. Replace oil and filters regularly.

Lift Cylinder Inspection: Check for oil leakage around the cylinder rod. If present, replace the seal kit immediately. Inspect the rod for deep scratches, which will damage new seals.

Hydraulic Pump Assessment: A worn or damaged pump cannot generate sufficient flow and pressure, leading to poor lifting performance. If the pump emits abnormal noise or performance does not improve, repair or replace the unit.

Control Valve Adjustment: Clean and inspect the control valve and relief valve. Stuck or improperly adjusted valves disrupt oil flow. Clean spools and adjust the relief valve to the manufacturer's standard pressure.

Final Verification:After maintenance, test the forklift under full load to ensure the mast lifts smoothly, quickly, and steadily, confirming the resolution of the issue.
