Wheel Loader Maintenance: Cold Winter & Freezing Environment Low-Temperature Start & Protection Guide

Apr 16, 2026

Wheel loaders in cold regions below -10°C face severe challenges: difficult starting, power attenuation, lubrication failure, seal cracking, and coolant freezing. This guide provides a full set of low-temperature maintenance measures to ensure reliable start and stable operation.

Pre-winter comprehensive preparation

  • Replace low-temperature diesel (e.g., -10#, -20#, -35#) to prevent waxing.
  • Use low-temperature engine oil (0W-40/5W-40) for good fluidity.
  • Replace antifreeze with protection below -35°C/-45°C and test concentration.
  • Replace low-temperature hydraulic/transmission oil to avoid viscosity increase.
  • Check heating systems: engine preheat, cab heater, and fuel tank heating.
  • Inspect batteries: low temps reduce capacity; replace weak ones and keep fully charged.
  • Clean radiators and ensure fans operate properly.

Low-temperature starting protection

  • Use intake air heating or flame preheating; do not use ether arbitrarily.
  • Crank for 3–5 seconds max; interval 15–20 seconds to avoid battery damage.
  • After starting, idle warm up 3–5 minutes until oil pressure and temperature rise.
  • Do not load immediately; operate lightly to warm the hydraulic system.

Fuel system anti-waxing

  • Use matched low-temperature diesel; add anti-wax additive if needed.
  • Heat fuel tanks and pipelines in extremely cold areas.
  • Drain water from separators daily to prevent freezing.

Lubrication and hydraulic maintenance

  • Shorten oil/filter replacement intervals.
  • Lubricate all joints before winter; use low-temp grease.
  • Avoid high-load operation until oil temperature rises.

Battery and electrical care

  • Check terminals and charge regularly.
  • Park indoors or use battery blankets if possible.

Operation specifications

  • Warm up sufficiently.
  • Avoid sudden throttling and impact loading.
  • Park with bucket down and cylinders relaxed; drain water if parking outdoors long-term.

Post-winter maintenance

  • Replace oils/filters with standard grades.
  • Check seals and components for cold damage.
  • Clean cooling system and restore normal settings.
  • Strictly following this guide ensures reliable starting and reduces failures in severe cold.
