Correct Use Of Anti-Slip Safety Footwear in Wet And Oily Workplaces

Apr 20, 2026

Anti-slip safety footwear is one of the most important PPE items to prevent falls and injuries in workplaces, especially in places with water, oil, detergent, or food residue, such as kitchens, workshops, warehouses, construction sites, and cold storage. However, many workers do not fully understand how to use anti-slip footwear correctly, which greatly reduces its protective effect and still leads to accidental falls.

First of all, it is very important to choose the right type of anti-slip sole for the workplace. Different sole materials and tread designs are suitable for different slippery environments. For example, rubber soles with deep treads perform well in wet and muddy construction sites, while oil-resistant and non-slip soles are needed in mechanical processing workshops with oil pollution. Catering and food processing environments require soles that can resist detergent and water, and maintain grip on smooth tile or steel surfaces. Before selecting, workers should confirm the main slippery substances in the workplace and refer to the product manual to ensure the footwear matches the actual working conditions.

Second, the correct wearing method directly affects the anti-slip effect. Safety footwear should be properly fastened with shoelaces or Velcro to fit the feet tightly. Loose footwear can easily cause unstable center of gravity, sliding in the shoe, or even tripping. Workers should not step on the heel of the shoe or wear it as a slipper, which will destroy the wrapping of the shoe and reduce the stability of walking. In addition, the size should be appropriate: too small will squeeze the feet and affect blood circulation, while too large will easily cause friction and blisters, and also reduce control over the footwear.

During work, workers should develop the habit of cleaning the sole treads regularly. Mud, oil, metal filings, and food residues are easy to get stuck in the grooves of the sole, which will fill the anti-slip texture and greatly reduce the friction coefficient. When stepping into a slippery area, reduce walking speed as much as possible, avoid sudden turns, running, or striding, and keep the center of gravity stable. It is especially dangerous to run quickly on oily or wet ground, even with high-level anti-slip footwear.

Workers should also know the limitations of anti-slip safety footwear. No product can provide complete non-slip protection under extreme conditions, such as a thick layer of oil, a large area of soapy water, or a highly smooth polished surface. Therefore, anti-slip PPE should be used together with environmental control measures, such as keeping the ground clean, laying anti-slip mats, and setting warning signs, to form a comprehensive safety protection system.

Finally, replace seriously worn anti-slip footwear in time. When the sole tread is worn flat, the anti-slip performance will be basically lost. Continuing to use such footwear is extremely dangerous and has no protective significance. Enterprises should establish a regular inspection and replacement system to ensure that every worker uses effective anti-slip safety footwear.
