High-visibility safety clothing is one of the most effective tools for preventing struck-by accidents, especially for workers on roads, construction sites, railways, airports, and logistics yards. However, simply wearing a hi-vis vest or jacket is not enough-correct selection, fit, and usage are essential to ensure maximum visibility and safety.
First, workers must choose the appropriate class of high-visibility clothing based on their work environment. In low-risk areas with slow-moving equipment, basic Class 1 vests may be sufficient. For roadwork, construction zones, and areas with moving vehicles, Class 2 or Class 3 garments with more fluorescent surface area and reflective tape are required. Working at night, in fog, rain, or dense dust requires full reflective coverage to ensure visibility under vehicle headlights.
Fit is equally important. Clothing that is too large can flap, catch on equipment, or block movement. Garments that are too tight may restrict motion and leave parts of the torso uncovered. The reflective strips must be positioned so they are visible from the front, back, and sides. They should not be covered by tool belts, backpacks, jackets, or other equipment, as this dramatically reduces visibility.
Workers should wear high-visibility gear at all times when in designated hazard zones, even if they are only staying for a short time. Many accidents occur when workers remove vests or jackets temporarily. In rainy or cold conditions, hi-vis outerwear such as waterproof jackets or thermal coats should be used instead of covering vests with non-reflective raincoats.
It is also important to keep hi-vis clothing clean and bright. Dirt, mud, grease, and fading can reduce visibility significantly. If the fluorescent color fades or the reflective tape peels, cracks, or becomes scratched, the garment must be replaced. Damaged or dirty high-visibility clothing provides a false sense of safety and should not be used.
By selecting the correct class, ensuring proper fit, keeping garments clean, and wearing them consistently, workers maximize their visibility and greatly reduce the risk of accidents. High-visibility PPE is simple but life-saving, and proper use is a foundational part of workplace safety.
