Care And Maintenance Of Anti-Static Clothing And Gloves

Apr 23, 2026

Anti-static PPE is widely used in electronics manufacturing, cleanrooms, chemical plants, and flammable environments, but its ability to prevent static electricity depends heavily on proper cleaning and maintenance. Improper care can permanently destroy anti-static properties, turning protective clothing into ineffective and dangerous gear.

First, always follow the manufacturer's washing instructions. Most anti-static garments require gentle machine washing or hand washing in cool or lukewarm water with neutral detergent. Harsh chemicals, bleach, fabric softeners, and alkaline cleaners must be avoided, as they can damage conductive fibers and coatings, causing a permanent loss of anti-static performance.

Do not wash anti-static clothing together with rough fabrics such as jeans or towels, as friction and abrasion can wear out the conductive threads. Fasten zippers and Velcro before washing to prevent snagging and damage. After washing, air dry the garments in a well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight and high temperatures. Tumble drying on high heat is usually not recommended unless clearly permitted by the label.

Before each use, inspect the clothing for broken fibers, peeling coating, stains, or damage. Pay special attention to cuffs, seams, and areas where conductive strips are attached. If the garment becomes overly dirty, stained with chemicals, or physically damaged, its anti-static function may be compromised and it should be replaced.

Anti-static gloves require similar care. They should be washed gently, air dried, and inspected for holes or wear. Avoid folding or creasing them repeatedly, as this can break internal conductive fibers. Store anti-static PPE in a clean, dry environment away from sharp objects, heat, and chemicals.

Even with proper care, anti-static clothing has a limited service life. After repeated washing and long-term use, conductive performance gradually decreases. Enterprises should establish a regular replacement cycle to ensure all anti-static PPE remains effective. Proper maintenance not only extends service life but also ensures workers and sensitive products remain protected from static damage.
