With the 5g privatization auction held last year, Brazil took the lead in implementing new technologies in Latin America. In 2022, the ultra-high speed Internet began to be implemented in the capital of the country, with greater processing capacity, faster speed, shorter response time, unlimited possibilities and new use cases. In the next few years, we will witness a new round of changes in various fields of society, but there is still no exact dimension of the impact on people's lives.
In this paper, we will focus on the improvement that 5g will bring to logistics, an important link of the supply chain. In this regard, people have great expectations to improve the productivity and quality of operations and services.
5g places to improve logistics
Far beyond the application of mobile phones, 5g will allow the popularization of Internet of things (IOT) technology applications. Thousands of robotic devices will be able to perform repetitive tasks and make simple decisions in operation and daily work.
In the past decade, the average number of connected devices per resident in the world has increased from 1.84 to 6.58 per resident. Today, more than 50 billion devices are connected to the Internet. This is unbelievable!
Distribution Centre
Robots will increasingly enter the scene
At present, the distribution center uses access point technology to distribute Wi Fi throughout the warehouse and connect optical readers, temperature sensors, cameras and other equipment. The coverage of these signals has some limitations, slow speed and connection problems, which hinder the effective use of a large number of equipment.
With 5g, this problem no longer exists. 5g will replace Wi Fi in the distribution center. Without cables, the signal coverage area will be expanded due to the new technology of low delay (time response).
Who knows the location of each item in the warehouse will be the machine and its system.
The investment in autonomous mobile robots (AMR – autonomous mobile robots) commanded by 5g will increase significantly, raising the automation of distribution centers to another level. Many tasks will be performed without operators and have higher quality and safety in the facility.
In the next few years, we will see the birth of a new generation of distribution center, in which the application of 5g private network will further improve the availability of data traffic related to automation.
All inland transportation and cargo storage activities will shift to advanced autonomous processing systems to achieve more flexible and accurate operation. The time and logistics cost of completing orders will be smaller and smaller.
E-commerce implementation and operation will greatly benefit from the new practices that 5g technology may bring, opening up profit margins for higher productivity, fewer picking failures, higher security and more dynamic delivery. Of course, the final consumer will thank you.
transport
An important part of the 5g auction agreement implemented is to improve the connectivity of Brazilian roads. It is expected that 36000 kilometers of expressways will receive 4G network signals through negotiations.
As a major improvement in this connectivity, we can mention:
● interactive traceability with drivers (rapid data collection, processing and return);
● safer autopilot (mixed with driver);
● video analysis for accident prevention;
● vehicle fault monitoring;
● use artificial intelligence (AI) routing to avoid traffic congestion;
● optimize vehicle supply considering price and driving distance;
● automatic parking at warehouse dock at 5g position.
We must still consider that 5g will accelerate the concept of smart city, in which the improvement of urban traffic and traffic management efficiency will undergo a revolutionary process, such as providing better mobility and service level for cities through intelligent traffic lights. "Last kilometer" makes "same day delivery" more and more possible.
In short, we are very close to seeing another wave of technological transformation that requires enterprises and companies to make adaptive efforts.
