EU sanctions have not yet affected the import of port equipment to Russia

Apr 18, 2022

Russia is an important market for international port equipment manufacturers, and world freight news compiled the main shipment data planned in the near future.

The largest production facilities in Europe are located in Poland, Germany, Spain, Italy, the Netherlands and Sweden. At present, port handling equipment is not subject to the "EU export ban on certain goods and technologies". According to Tass news agency, two Liebherr LHM 550 mobile port cranes are expected to be delivered to Russian Oriental loading and unloading company this year.

The terminal operator previously reported that these cranes were manufactured at Liebherr factory in Rostock, Germany, with a lifting capacity of 144 tons per crane. These cranes have a maximum extension length of 54 meters and can handle ships with containers up to 16 rows wide. These cranes have a high degree of mobility and operability and can operate in hook, spreader (using double cranes, up to two containers can be handled at the same time) and grab mode. Delivery is planned for the third quarter.

St. Petersburg seaport, Russia

The Russian port of St. Petersburg (mpspb), which is part of the SPC group, will receive 40 new transshipment equipment from suppliers in the EU and Japan this year, mainly heavy and light forklifts. However, these goods should have been financed by a US $20 million credit line opened in January by the Austrian Raiffeisen bank, a Russian subsidiary of the St. Petersburg seaport. It is unclear whether the transaction can be carried out under the implementation of financial sanctions.

World freight news predicts that Chinese port equipment manufacturers, such as Zhenhua and Sany Heavy Industry, will increase their presence in the Russian port market. The equipment of these manufacturers is already operating in the ports of Vladivostok, vostochini and novorossisk. Russia has its own transshipment equipment manufacturer, baltkran. The company's production facilities are located in the Kaliningrad enclave, and WCN expects that the sanctions may make it difficult for its products to be transported to Russia through Lithuania and Latvia.
