Hydraulic System Maintenance: Key To Excavator Performance
Mar 12, 2026
Daily Inspection Checklist
Before Starting:
- Check hydraulic oil level in the reservoir
- Inspect for visible leaks around hydraulic connections
- Verify oil condition (color and cleanliness)
- Test all hydraulic controls for proper response
Weekly Maintenance:
- Change hydraulic filters according to manufacturer schedule
- Check hydraulic hoses for cracks, abrasions, or swelling
- Inspect hydraulic cylinders for leaks or excessive play
- Test relief valve operation
Common Hydraulic Problems and Solutions
Problem: Slow Cylinder Extension
- Cause: Air in hydraulic system
- Solution: Bleed the system following manufacturer procedures
- Frequency: After hydraulic work or if system is opened
Problem: Hydraulic Oil Contamination
- Cause: Filter failure or ingress of dirt/water
- Solution: Replace filters, drain and refill with fresh oil
- Frequency: Every 500 hours or as recommended
Problem: Overheating
- Cause: Clogged cooler, low oil level, or restricted flow
- Solution: Clean or replace cooler, check oil level, inspect filters
Pro Tips
- Use high-quality hydraulic oil with proper viscosity rating
- Change oil and filters at regular intervals regardless of operating hours
- Keep hydraulic system components clean to prevent contamination
- Monitor oil temperature; excessive heat reduces oil life and equipment performance
