Lubrication Grease Management

First, choosing the right grease is crucial.

Komatsu officially recommends using G2-L1 lithium-based grease, and there's a good reason for this. Excavators operate under heavy loads and strong impact forces, and ordinary grease is easily squeezed out, leading to dry friction. G2-L1 has excellent wear resistance and adhesion, maintaining an oil film under heavy loads. I've seen many construction sites using cheap calcium-based grease to save money, resulting in premature wear of the boom and arm pins, increased clearance, and clanking noises during operation. Replacing a bushing, including labor and parts, costs several thousand yuan. This is a false economy.

Second, the core technique of grease application is "displacement," not "filling."

This is the point I want to emphasize most. Many novices stop applying grease as soon as they see new grease coming out of the grease nipple. This is wrong! The correct procedure is to continue until all the old grease and worn metal debris are squeezed out from the seal gaps. Why? Because the old grease is full of impurities and wear particles; if you don't squeeze them out, the new grease will mix with the dirt, accelerating wear. I usually wipe the squeezed-out old grease with my finger; if I find shiny metal particles, it indicates increased wear in that area, requiring more frequent lubrication or preparation for maintenance.

Before applying grease, be sure to wipe the grease nipple and surrounding area clean of sand and dirt. I once encountered a case where the operator applied grease without cleaning, directly injecting sand and dirt into the gap between the pin and bushing, creating a "grinding paste," which wore out the newly replaced bushing in less than a month.

Third, different parts require different lubrication frequencies.

For example, the pins on the bucket linkage are subjected to countless impacts and friction every day, so it's best to lubricate them every 8-10 operating hours. For parts like the swing ring gear, regular lubrication according to the manual is sufficient.

Lubrication is the "blood circulation" of the excavator; only with smooth oil flow can the machine remain strong and healthy. Don't let the few minutes saved by being lazy now lead to days of costly repairs and downtime later.
