About the future of the North American telescopic boom fork loader Market

May 12, 2022

From new products to the hot market, the remote operation equipment industry is ready to develop steadily in the coming year.

This is a question that customers have been asking for years. When will JLG enter the rotating equipment market?

JLG answered this urgent question at the end of last year, when the company announced that it would launch three rotary telescopic boom cranes for the US market through a new partnership with Dieci, an Italian manufacturer. The company has produced rotary cranes for more than 20 years.

Rogerio dos Santos, vice president of telescopic boom engineering of JLG, said: "We spent a lot of time working with Dieci to really focus on the design of these machines and design them to look and feel like any other JLG machine. When we really entered the rotary telescopic boom market, our two award-winning brands combined with Dieci's good rotary business in Europe enabled us to develop products that meet the specific needs of the North American market."

Therefore, r1370, r1385 and r11100 rotary telescopic boom forklifts were born. The three new JLG models have a maximum lifting height of 67.3 to 97.1 feet and a maximum lifting capacity of 11000 to 13200 pounds, with a similar base configuration, although the r1370 and r1385 have four jibs and the r11100 has five jibs. All main boom parts, no matter what model, are driven by oil cylinder and chain to support higher elongation and greater lifting capacity.

"We really took advantage of the product design and engineering expertise of the two companies." Santos said. "Our customers can expect the same product quality, parts, service and support level as JLG products."

Automatic accessory recognition

JLG focuses on the standard key functions of the new rotary telescopic boom fork loader - such as foam filled tires, front and rear scissor legs with automatic leveling jacks, standard and continuous auxiliary hydraulic systems, and 360 degree continuous rotation of the upper frame. Santos pointed out that this continuous rotation can achieve horizontal and vertical lifting and placement capacity, adding a new functional layer where the traditional telescopic loading and unloading vehicle is difficult to operate.

Through the automatic leveling jack, the frames of these equipment can be leveled six degrees to compensate for uneven terrain and improve the safety and versatility of the machine.

Each model also uses three additional technologies: automatic accessory identification, load management information system (LMIs) and load stability indicator (LSI).

"The automatic accessory identification system can identify the accessories at the end of the boom, remind the operator to confirm, and then load the appropriate load capacity chart." "LMIs shows whether the load meets the requirements and prevents operations that violate the limits of the chart. The LSI limits the function of the rotary telescopic boom when the load is close to the maximum load capacity," Santos explained

The progress of these technologies is crucial to JLG!

"For us, a very important focus is to make the machine and operation interface as simple and intuitive as possible." "Moreover, the three in one machine capability enables these rotary telescopic booms to complete not only the work of traditional telescopic booms, but also the work of MEWP equipped with platform accessories or cross-country crane equipped with truss arm and winch - which may eliminate the need for cranes up to 97 feet," Santos said

JLG expects their rotating devices to be used throughout the city and crowded work sites, where mobility may be a problem. They also saw applications in warehousing construction, urban center projects, etc.

Production of JLG's rotating device has begun, and dos Santos said the company has orders. The equipment will be shipped in April 2022. However, some equipment is already on site in the United States because JLG customers are testing these machines to provide feedback.

With regard to the new equipment, JLG will also provide operator and service training certification for the rotary telescopic boom, and the company added that the parts are already in stock and can be shipped from warehouses in the United States.

Increased demand for telescopic loaders

It can be said that in its infancy, the telescopic arm fork loader was considered to be just a taking and placing machine. Just 15 years ago, OEMs sometimes had to justify their choice of telescopic arm forklifts over straight gantry counterweight forklifts.

Oh, how far have we come.

From ultra small equipment to heavy rotating equipment, telescopic arm fork loader not only consolidated its position in the work site, but also continued to change the way of work.

Looking back on a better than expected 2021, OEMs reported strong demand and sales of telescopic boom forklifts; In the three months before December 31, 2021, JLG's telescopic boom sales increased by more than 71% compared with the same period last year to reach US $210.6 million. As the US construction market prepares to continue to climb, the industry should expect the same demand for these devices.

According to the American Equipment Manufacturers Association (AEM), construction pipelines, especially residential pipelines, remain stable. The Association expects the overall construction industry to grow by 2.7% this year. "If this happens, construction spending in 2022 will exceed that in 2019, which is a landmark year for the industry," the association said

At present, the total pipeline under construction is 464 billion US dollars, including 742.71 billion US dollars before bidding, 33.65 billion US dollars for bidding and 28.28 billion US dollars in the award / financing stage. Another $233 billion was postponed or cancelled, mainly due to labor and material shortages.

"The U.S. jobs program will greatly boost infrastructure spending." "The biggest impact will be in 2022 and 2023," said Benjamin duyck, director of market intelligence at AEM

Significant development signs

Another new North American market rotation came from JCB last year. The 512-83r telescopic boom fork loader has a lifting height of 83 feet and a maximum load capacity of 12000 pounds.

Rebecca Yates, JCB's material handling product manager, said that the demand for all JCB telescopic boom fork loader models - from compact to heavy-duty to rotary - continued to show signs of significant growth next year. Yates pointed out that the wind and solar energy industry, large enterprise construction projects and general buildings are developing in a positive direction.

Yates said: "JCB telehandler demand has remained strong in 2021 and continues to grow as we expand our product portfolio, including 505-20e electric compact telehandler and 512-83r rotary telehandler. General construction and commercial development are the main applications, but we also see telehandler working in roads and bridges, wind and solar farms, and industrial applications. Telehandler is always Proud to be the first to arrive at the construction site and the last to leave. Due to the need to quickly place materials in more locations, the telescopic boom fork loader is very important to keep the work going smoothly. "

Last year, JCB also launched the all electric 505-20e compact telescopic boom fork loader, opening up a new road in the telescopic boom fork loader industry.

Yates pointed out: "Electric steering offers new applications never used before, including inside buildings, around food and animals, and even underground; it can also improve the efficiency of night or early morning preparation at the workplace without worrying about noise, while still providing a load of 5250 pounds. Environmentally friendly power options are expanding opportunities for a variety of devices, including telescopic forklifts. Electrification is not telescopic forks At the last stop of installation, JCB is taking the lead in developing hydrogen and other energy sources, and will continue to promote the market to create new trends. "

Matthew, CEO of snorkel and Xtreme manufacturing, said that snorkel also felt the electric transformation, and its interest in its all electric telescopic boom fork loader sr5719e increased. Snorkel said large contractors and leasing companies were interested in meeting growing emissions and noise regulations in densely populated urban areas.

Elvin said: "Globally, electrification is an important trend. At snorkel, we are one of the first companies to provide an all electric compact off-road telescopic boom forklift, which can provide the same performance as diesel engines. Although we hope to see more electric compact models in the coming months and years, technically, from the perspective of performance and affordability, high load telescopic boom forklift The electrification of the machine is still more challenging. "

Elvin said that the telescopic boom forklift market in North America remained strong in 2021, and pointed out that snorkel sr5719 was still the company's highest selling model last year, and continued to be popular on construction sites due to its compact size. In the Xtreme business, there is continued demand for 12000 LB telehandler and higher load models (such as its 15000 LB telehandler and larger models) this year.

"The demand for telescopic boom forklifts, in fact, is still strong for most high-end equipment, and we expect this demand to continue until 2022. The biggest challenge facing the industry in 2022 is whether the equipment supply can meet the demand. At present, due to the constraints of the supply chain, we may see a shortage of new equipment in the first half of this year at least," Elvin said

Manufacturer's supply chain problems

Mitch fedie, Pettibone's marketing manager, is also worried about the supply chain, although he admits that 2021 is "very strong" for Pettibone.

Fedie said: "The real estate market has always been strong, which is a good market for contractors engaged in residential and commercial construction. In this regard, the demand for telescopic boom forklifts and other construction equipment must have increased. It was 180 years from 2020 to 2020, when there was great uncertainty and specific work did not happen. At present, the challenge facing the whole industry is to make components meet the demand and manage some increased demand Cost. "

Pettibone launched the traverse t1056x telescopic arm fork loader last year, which is the company's first 10000 pound transverse model, filling an important gap in the company's product line.

By 2022, the Michigan based manufacturer will launch more new machines, including two new 15000 pound X-Series devices.

"I think the market itself in 2022 is even stronger than that in 2021."

"So far, we expect availability to be an advantage of Pettibone X-Series telescopic boom forklifts, so we have a good opportunity to help dealers and rental fleets update their inventory," fedie said.

Electric solution of telescopic arm fork loader

Genie expects demand to remain strong, but also notes challenges in raw materials and supply chain constraints.

"This is indeed an unprecedented situation in which the global supply chain is under continuous pressure."

"As a result, equipment owners are forced to aging their fleet. In addition to doing our best to mitigate supply chain problems, genie also supports our customers by focusing on responsive parts and services to assist customers in maintaining on-site equipment," said amalija kopac, genie's product manager

As one of the pioneers of equipment electrification, kopac pointed out that Genie mastered the plug-in pulse.

"The elephants in the room here are electrified because we are beginning to see manufacturers launch electric solutions."

Kopac said: "this is certainly what we are watching and closely watching at genie. But we don't want to just because we can launch the electric telescopic boom fork loader. Instead, we focus on introducing the right technology and the right functions at the right time so that they meet the needs of field equipment operators and add greater value to equipment owners and their businesses."

The latest Genie telescopic boom fork loader gth-1056 was first released in 2006 and launched in early 2021. Over the past few years, genie said it had made significant improvements in redesigning the device.

"It offers a 74 HP def free engine option with an optional continuously variable transmission (CVT)."

"CVT improves efficiency by transferring more engine power to the driveline than a powershift transmission. The 74 HP engine and CVT together provide the same drawbar pull as a 120 HP engine and powershift transmission, but no def or aftertreatment. The end result is a more fuel-efficient machine that requires less engine maintenance and lower total cost of ownership," kopac explained

Strong rental demand

Manitou group said that its sales of telescopic boom forklifts increased strongly in 2021.

"For North America, the demand for leasing and dealer fleet sales is still the highest."

Steve kiskunas, product manager of Manitou telescopic forklift, said: "we continue to see strong rental market demand because telescopic forklift is a mature building rental tool in the North American market."

Manitou expects to continue to be a strong market for the sales of telescopic boom forklifts and the entire North American construction market in 2022.

"We are optimistic that the economy will continue to recover from the impact of the pandemic because we have found new ways to work without exposure to the virus. However, the biggest impact on the telescopic forklift market is the unfortunate supply chain problems we face as an equipment manufacturer. These supply chain problems are delaying shipments due to parts shortages," kiskunas said

In 2021, Manitou launched MRT vision and MRT vision plus rotary telescopic boom forklifts, replacing the previous Manitou privilege and privilege plus rotary telescopic boom forklifts. The company plans to launch new models this year, but details have not yet been released.

2022 shows positive signs in the industry

At AMS Merlo, positive emotions are also loud. Austin Bailey, the company's sales manager, said: "2021 has been an extraordinary year for our entire product supply. We have seen significant growth in our p120.10hm, p65.14hm and roto models, but I would like to say that the fastest growing market for us in 2021 is the tree care industry“

Bailey said that Arborists have found models of rotary telescopic arm forklifts and have combined these devices with grab saw accessories to be used as tree cutters.

"This greatly improves their work efficiency, enables them to complete more work in a shorter time, and helps to solve the shortage of skilled labor." Bailey said.

For the coming year, Bailey predicts that 2022 will be the continuation of 2021 and will be stronger.

"This year we have added many excellent dealers to our dealer network, and these new dealers and new markets have brought opportunities. We are excited about what 2022 will bring and expect the high load and rotary telescopic arm fork loader models to continue to be our leaders," he said

Just on magni coast, COO Gary Weisman said that 2021 was "very positive" for the company - unit sales more than tripled compared with 2020, and magni added many new dealers to expand its coverage throughout the United States

Magni launched several new models in its th series traditional straight arm fork loader at the end of 2021. Weisman said: "we are ready to deal with the mainstream market, but we have unprecedented safety functions in the United States."

Magni telescopic boom fork loader has advanced load limiting system, digital load chart with LMI and touch screen.

"Although the rotary telescopic boom forklift really dominates."

Weisman pointed out: "but for magni, the safety factor provided by all our machines changes the rules of the game. Given that safety is such an important consideration and magni's unique ability to help eliminate potential operator errors, more and more companies see magni as the preferred solution."

In the north, Skyjack witnessed the steady growth of its telescopic boom fork loader Series in the past five years, and pointed out that 2021 is no exception, because the market has increased by more than 30% compared with 2020, significantly returning to the level before the pandemic. In mid-2021, Skyjack launched, and the company said that the updated th series had successfully increased the sales of telescopic boom forklifts in North America by one percentage point. Skyjack expects the steady growth of all its th models to continue until next year.

Compact telescopic boom fork loader leads the North American market

Bobcat also launched a new telescopic boom fork loader tl619 last year. The company said that the small and powerful compact industry is still strong for the company.

"The biggest trend affecting telescopic boom forklifts in North America today is the increasing popularity of compact telescopic boom forklifts."

"These machines have the mobility of articulated wheel loaders, the versatility of skid Loaders' accessories and the high range of telescopic arm forklifts," said Justin MOE, a bobcat product expert
