Takeuchi TB290-2 Compact Excavator Extends Full-Size Breakout Force to the 9-Ton Short-Tailswing Class

Oct 14, 2026

Takeuchi's TB290-2 defines the upper end of the manufacturer's compact excavator range - a 9-ton-class machine that delivers breakout force figures typically reserved for conventional-tailswing excavators, in a short-tailswing package built for confined urban, roadside, and landscaping work. Powered by a turbocharged Yanmar diesel engine meeting Stage V emissions compliance, the TB290-2 delivers a 59.1 kN bucket breakout force and 36.3 kN arm digging force - class-leading figures for a 9-ton machine that previously required a conventional-tailswing chassis to achieve.

The machine's defining hydraulic architecture is a Kawasaki "closed-center load-sensing" system that delivers outstanding multifunction capability - allowing the operator to run the boom, arm, bucket, and swing circuits simultaneously without flow restriction between them. Combined with multiple attachment presets that allow operators to save hydraulic flow settings for different tools (breaker, auger, grapple) and adjust auxiliary flow rates directly from the cab, the TB290-2 minimizes the downtime traditionally associated with attachment changes in the field. "Dual proportional control" comes as standard - allowing the operator to modulate auxiliary hydraulic flow with proportional thumb switches on the joysticks, supporting fine control for tilting buckets, rotating grapples, and other proportional attachment functions.

The TB290-2's short-tailswing configuration delivers a 1,650 mm tail swing radius with only 540 mm of overhang at 90 degrees to the tracks, allowing the machine to slew fully within its own track footprint while working against walls, fences, and existing structures. Combined with dual boom cylinders fitted with hose-burst check valves (delivering added lifting power and additional clearance for bucket and attachment work), a heavy-duty 500 mm-high dozer blade for on-site finishing and grading, and a spacious cab with a large color monitor displaying critical machine functions, the TB290-2 delivers full-size excavator productivity in a package that competes directly with the Kubota KX080, Yanmar Vio80, and Hitachi ZX85 in the global 9-ton compact segment. Takeuchi backs the machine with a 3-year/3,000-hour warranty, among the longest in the compact excavator segment.
