BOMAG BW 213 D-5 Single-Drum Vibratory Roller Extends ECOMODE Fuel Savings to the 13-Ton Soil Compaction Class

Oct 13, 2026

BOMAG's BW 213 D-5 represents the manufacturer's flagship 13-ton single-drum vibratory roller, designed for large-scale soil compaction on highways, dams, rail beds, and industrial site preparation where compaction depth, productivity, and fuel economy determine project economics. The machine combines a Cummins or Deutz engine with BOMAG's proven vibratory drum technology, delivering line loads suitable for deep soil compaction across granular and mixed soils.

The defining feature of the D-5 series is "ECOMODE" - BOMAG's automatic engine-speed reduction system that lowers engine RPM whenever full hydraulic power is not required. During travel between compaction passes, during turns, and during pauses between passes, ECOMODE reduces engine speed proportionally to demand, cutting fuel consumption by up to 20 percent compared with conventional fixed-speed operation. Combined with BOMAG's hydrostatic travel drive and vibration drive - which deliver infinitely variable speed control without mechanical gear shifts - the BW 213 D-5 provides smoother, more controlled compaction passes with less operator fatigue and less over-compaction of finished surfaces.

The machine's dual-frequency vibration system allows the operator to select between low-frequency/high-amplitude for deep compaction on thick lifts and high-frequency/low-amplitude for surface finishing - a single-drum system that spans the full range of soil compaction requirements. Combined with BOMAG's "BOMAP" compaction documentation system (which maps compaction passes and identifies soft spots in real time), the BW 213 D-5 delivers verified compaction quality rather than pass-count assumptions. Standard equipment includes self-locking differential and twin-spring-accumulator brakes on the rear axle for slope safety, articulated steering with a 35-degree steering angle and 12-degree oscillation angle for precise maneuverability on uneven ground, and a ROPS-certified cab with air conditioning and BOMAG's standard LCD display for machine status monitoring.
