Grove GMK5250L All-Terrain Crane Refines MAXbase Variable Outrigger Concept for Constrained Urban Lifts

Oct 10, 2026

Grove, a Manitowoc company, positions the GMK5250L as the strongest long-boom five-axle all-terrain crane on the market, delivering a nominal 300-USt (250-tonne) capacity from a seven-section 70-meter main boom paired with a 21-meter swingaway jib that extends maximum tip height to 110 meters. The crane's defining differentiator is not raw capacity but the geometry it can achieve in constrained spaces - an overall carrier length of just 15.3 meters and a minimum width of 2.75 meters allow the machine to position itself in urban jobsites that historically demanded a separate truck-mounted crane or a lattice crawler delivered in multiple loads.

The engineering centerpiece is Grove's "MAXbase" variable outrigger positioning system. Rather than a fixed outrigger base requiring the machine to be set up at full span to realize its rated capacity, MAXbase allows each of the four outriggers to be positioned independently at any of five predefined spans, with the crane's load charts recalculating automatically for whatever geometry the operator actually sets up. This means a GMK5250L working in a narrow city street can extend the outriggers fully on one side (where space permits) and partially on the other, and the Crane Control System adjusts the capacity envelope accordingly - extracting maximum available capacity from whatever footprint the site allows rather than forcing the crane to operate at the derated "short-span" capacity across the board.

The fully electronic Crane Control System replaces the traditional hydraulic pilot controls with electrical joystick inputs processed by the crane's onboard controller, providing integrated load-moment calculation, boom-configurator mode (where the operator selects the exact boom and jib configuration and the system loads the matching chart), and outrigger-position-based capacity adjustment. Combined with MEGATRAK independent suspension and all-wheel steering on the carrier - which supports a tight turning radius and crab steering for precise positioning on confined access roads - the GMK5250L is being targeted at bridge work, industrial erection, and wind-turbine service lifts where the machine must self-erect, work at long boom, and relocate frequently on tight urban infrastructure.
