Volvo ECR145 Compact Radius Excavator Combines Short-Swing Capability with Full-Size 14-Ton Productivity

Oct 13, 2026

Volvo positions the ECR145 as the centerpiece of its compact-radius crawler excavator range - a roughly 14-ton machine engineered to deliver full-size excavator productivity in a package that can work safely in congested urban, highway, and demolition environments where a conventional-tailswing excavator cannot operate. Powered by a Volvo D4E diesel engine rated at 89 kW (119 hp) net output, the ECR145 pairs its compact footprint with performance that competes directly with conventional-tailswing machines in the same weight class.

The defining engineering feature is the ECR145's "short-swing" architecture - the upper structure's rear counterweight overhangs the tracks by only a few centimeters, allowing the machine to slew a full 360 degrees within its own track footprint. This means the excavator can work immediately adjacent to walls, traffic barriers, excavations, and existing structures without rear-end collision risk - an operational advantage that's critical for utility trenching, roadside maintenance, and urban demolition. Combined with a boom-swing function that allows the boom to offset left or right relative to the machine's centerline, the operator can dig alongside walls and position spoil piles without repositioning the chassis.

The machine's hydraulic system uses Volvo's "Advanced Load Sensing" architecture, which continuously matches pump output to operator demand - providing maximum dig force when required while reducing flow during precision work, minimizing fuel consumption and hydraulic heat generation. Auxiliary hydraulic circuits support a full range of attachments including breakers, augers, and tilting buckets, with flow settings programmable from the cab display. The Volvo Care Cab features a spacious interior with excellent forward visibility, low noise levels, and high-capacity air conditioning for extended shifts. Combined with Volvo's comprehensive telematics platform for fleet monitoring, the ECR145 positions itself as a cost-competitive alternative to Kubota KX080, Takeuchi TB290, and Hitachi ZX135 in the global compact excavator segment.
