What Batteries Are Used For Electric Forklifts? What Are The Advantages Of Lithium Battery Forklifts Over Lead-acid Battery Forklifts?

Oct 23, 2025

1, What batteries are used in electric forklifts

Electric forklifts refer to forklifts that operate on electricity, and can be classified into different types based on the batteries used. Generally, electric forklifts use three types of batteries:

1. Lead acid battery

Lead acid batteries are one of the most traditional and commonly used battery types for electric forklifts. They use lead plates and sulfuric acid electrolyte, which have lower energy density and specific energy, but relatively lower cost. The advantages of lead-acid batteries are maturity, stability, long service life, and the ability to cycle charge and discharge multiple times. However, lead-acid batteries have disadvantages such as heavy weight, long charging time, and fast self discharge, which affect the efficiency and endurance of electric forklifts.

2. Lithium battery

Lithium batteries, as an emerging battery technology, are gradually emerging in the field of electric forklifts. Lithium batteries have higher energy density and specific energy, and compared to lead-acid batteries, they have lighter weight and longer usage time. Meanwhile, lithium batteries also have advantages such as no memory effect and fast charging, which can effectively improve the working efficiency of electric forklifts. However, lithium batteries are relatively expensive, and attention should be paid to preventing excessive discharge and charging during use to avoid safety accidents.

3. Fuel cell

Fuel cells are also an emerging power source in electric forklifts. Fuel cells generate electricity through the reaction of hydrogen and oxygen, without the need for charging, simply by adding fuel. Fuel cells have the advantages of fast charging and zero emissions, which can meet the needs of electric forklifts for long-term and high-intensity work. However, fuel cell technology is currently not mature enough, and there are certain difficulties and costs in the construction of related equipment and fuel supply chains.

2, What are the advantages of lithium battery forklifts over lead-acid battery forklifts

Lithium batteries and lead-acid batteries are the two most commonly used types of batteries in electric forklifts. Compared to lead-acid forklifts, lithium battery forklifts have the following main advantages:

1. Fast charging speed

Lithium batteries rely on their own chemical properties to meet faster charging speed requirements, with a charging time of only 2 hours from 10% to 100%. Lead acid batteries require 8-10 hours of charging time from 20% to 100%.

2. Charging without memory

The memory free charging feature of lithium battery forklifts allows the battery to be charged randomly and intermittently without affecting its lifespan. Users can efficiently use their work and rest time to replenish their battery, making it convenient for them to coordinate their work. Lead acid batteries have charging memory, and random or intermittent charging can seriously damage the battery and shorten its lifespan. Therefore, they generally require a 20% -100% full charge discharge and regular balanced charging.

3. Long service life

Lead acid batteries have an average cycle life of 1200 cycles (approximately 6000 hours of operation), while lithium iron phosphate batteries have a cycle life of 4000 cycles (approximately 24000 hours of operation). In practical use, lithium iron phosphate batteries still have over 65% capacity after 4000 uses, while lead-acid batteries have less than 50% capacity after 1200 uses.

4. Wide discharge temperature range

At high or low temperatures between -20 ° C and 60 ° C, lithium batteries have good discharge performance. At -20 ° C, the discharge efficiency of lithium batteries is 80% to 90%, while lead-acid batteries have a discharge efficiency of less than 30%.
