Caterpillar, Liebherr, Hitachi, and Doosan are all holding hands on intelligent technology. What changes are needed in the excavator industry?

Jun 30, 2020

Recently, one manufacturer after another in the field of construction machinery, Doosan launched Xite Cloud, Hitachi installed slope control, Liebherr and Leica, Caterpillar joined hands with Lightstream, and also verified that Fluidmesh wireless technology is not even listening. As I said, what are these "diggers" in the public's perspective?

1. Doosan Infracore launched a new smart building solution Xite Cloud

On May 19, Doosan Infracore announced the launch of its new intelligent building solution Xite Cloud, which can complete complex building surveys and earthwork calculations within 1-2 days to maximize productivity. Xite Cloud is the first step in the commercialization of Concept-X, its integrated driverless and automated control solution, which opens the door for Doosan to expand its business portfolio into the field of construction site management, beyond manufacturing and sales of construction equipment.

Xite Cloud is an earthwork management solution. By combining its own 3D drone survey results, earthwork calculation and construction operation plan with a dedicated cloud platform, the contracting company can generate the optimal construction plan and provide The most efficient on-site operation. Through Xite Cloud, contractors can manage multiple tasks such as surveying, terrain analysis, equipment operation, and construction management on one platform, thereby reducing construction costs, saving time, and improving work schedules, thereby improving production efficiency.

2. Liebherr and Leica Geosystems establish an excavator control partnership

Recently, Liebherr and Leica Geosystems have established a partnership for excavator control. In cooperation with Leica Geosystems, Liebherr's crawler and wheel excavators can now be equipped with 2D and 3D machine control systems at the factory.

This optional system can be added to Liebherr's 6th and 8th generation excavators, which have single-arm and two-arm booms, and have integrated tilting rotors or hydraulic tilting buckets ability. Customers can also choose to pre-wire the machine so that they can retrofit the machine control system later.

The Lieca iCON iXE2 2D machine control system displays the actual position of the bucket relative to the design elevation and slope, allowing users to reach the design level faster. Leica's iCON iXE3 3D system displays real-time project data and related work tasks on the machine display.

3. Caterpillar joins hands with light flow to create a new way of enterprise digital production management

Recently, Lightstream signed a contract with Caterpillar, the world's top 500 and a leader in construction machinery and equipment. Based on the light-free user-oriented positioning of Lightstream, Caterpillar upgraded its Caterpillar IT service response model.

From top-level IT planning and design, step-by-step implementation of project strategies to meet the high requirements of Caterpillar system architecture, information security, system performance and other indicators; combined with actual conditions, quickly connect workers, management, business processes, systems through light flow Data and production equipment, from the scene quickly land CI (rationalization advice) system, TPM (total production equipment management) system, Andon (rapid response) system and other system services, comprehensively create a new way of enterprise digital intelligent management.

4. Caterpillar verifies that Fluidmesh wireless technology can improve the network functions of Command products

After a year of extensive testing, Caterpillar has completed the verification of a wireless technology that will improve the networking capabilities of its Cat? MineStar? Command products for traction and bulldozing users. The wireless technology is provided by Fluidmesh Networks, which is the world's leading provider of operational technology (OT) wireless network applications (wireless network applications involving fast-moving and autonomous vehicles).

"Fluidmesh's goal is to help customers improve the productivity of the entire mine by providing a better wireless transmission layer," said Cosimo Malesci, Fluidmesh co-founder and executive vice president of sales. "We are very pleased to be able to reach this milestone cooperation with Caterpillar and promote our solution to Command customers."

Fluidmesh uses a wireless protocol based on Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS), a routing technology that reduces roaming time, packet loss, and complexity of the entire network.

5. New technology: Hitachi excavator equipped with slope control function, debuted at ConExpo 2020

At the ConExpo 2020 exhibition in Las Vegas, Hitachi demonstrated its new grade control technology developed with the Topcon positioning system. Hitachi Solution Linkage integrated grade control technology allows excavator operators to concentrate on controlling the machine’s arms, while the machine itself controls the boom and bucket. Hitachi stated that the system can improve the efficiency of the driver's correct operation, and allows inexperienced operators to perform rating without strengthening supervision.

The company said that because the technology can prevent excavators from digging below a preset height, it reduces the need for graded piles and also reduces the occurrence of excessive excavation. The system will be factory installed and calibrated on future models of Hitachi’s Dash-6 construction excavator.

Hitachi said it will provide two options-2D or 3D slope control. The 2D version control is at the forefront of the benchmark, while the 3D version contains the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS), which requires a globally referenced position and altitude.

It is not difficult to see from the content that these companies with advanced technology and deep R&D investment still strive to develop the product itself, whether it is from Xite Cloud or Leica Geosystems, or Fluidmesh wireless technology, or a slope control system, the purpose is to improve the operation staff Experience, using technology to change productivity. With the aging and aging of construction machinery employees, it is especially important to simplify operations and improve work efficiency. In the future, unmanned operation, fleet management, remote control, etc., liberating your hands will not be a fool's dream, we will wait and see!
