Global seaports will deploy more than 150000 heavy-duty AGVs by 2027

Jun 14, 2022

Port authorities around the world have been investing in future oriented infrastructure and introducing 5g/lte private networks covering the entire port site.

According to ABI research, global seaports have increased their automation solutions or launched automation plans to alleviate port congestion. In fact, equipment such as gantry cranes, automatic port gates, stackers and horizontal transportation solutions, such as automated guided vehicles (AGVS), are undergoing global seaport deployment, with an annual compound growth rate of more than 26% from 2022 to 2027, and more than 150000 units will be deployed globally by 2027.

"Automation enhances the reliability, consistency, predictability (through data analysis) and security of port operations. From an environmental perspective, automation can reduce energy consumption, thereby reducing the carbon footprint. Automated ports are also far safer than traditional ports." said adhish luitel, senior analyst for supply chain management and logistics at ABI research. " As the performance of automation and data collection solutions becomes more predictable, the number of human related interrupts decreases. "

"Port automation also highlights the need for a large amount of timely data, which is necessary for the control and monitoring of all mobile assets. In order for automation solutions to work well and cooperate with each other, ports need to provide a certain degree of data reliability in a cost-effective way. For this reason, wireless connection is the best choice." Luitel added.
