North America and Europe Downtime Index: A slight decline reflects the impact of the holiday

May 28, 2020

The downtime index for the 21st week from May 18th has dropped by 11%, although this period includes the Ascension Day, which is a common holiday in Northern and Western Europe.

Autumn reflects the holidays of the same period in 2019 (holiday in the 22nd week). Next week's index will also be affected by the US Memorial Day holiday.

According to the index, Eastern Europe is the only region to increase utilization, and its level is only a few points lower than the benchmark level in the fourth week of January this year.

Other regions have experienced declines, with North America and Southern Europe having the smallest declines.

In terms of the number of machines used (defined as machines with the engine running for more than one hour), it decreased from 58% in the 20th week to 56% in the previous week. The number of working machines has decreased by nearly 10 percentage points from the same period last year.

Now, the downtime indexes in North America and Northern Europe are very similar, both lower than Eastern Europe, but higher than Western and Southern Europe.

The index is calculated by the telematics expert Trackunit based on data from more than 150,000 non-road machinery (including end users and leased machines). About 40% are aerial work platforms, of which the leasing company is the main owner. The change in coordinated engine utilization (defined as the voltage activity on the machine's alternator) is expressed as an index for quick international comparison. KHL Group is the exclusive media partner and publishes weekly updates on the index.
