According to the latest statistics released by the Japan Construction Equipment Manufacturers Association (CEMA), the sales volume of construction machinery in Japan in March 2022 was 341.1 billion yen (about 17.97 billion yuan), a year-on-year increase of 17.7%, maintaining a positive growth for 17 consecutive months since November 2020.
In March, Japan's domestic sales reached 122.2 billion yen (about 6.44 billion yuan), a year-on-year increase of 0.8%, realizing positive year-on-year growth in sales for five consecutive months.
Export sales were 218.9 billion yen (about 11.54 billion yuan), an increase of 29.7% year-on-year, also showing a year-on-year upward trend for 17 consecutive months.
In the first quarter, the growth rate of domestic market was the highest
Excavator domestic demand and export sales win-win
In the first quarter of 2022, the total sales of construction machinery in Japan was 822.1 billion yen (about 43.32 billion yuan), an increase of 23.1% year-on-year. Among them, the total domestic sales in Japan was 273.6 billion yen (about 43.32 billion yuan), a year-on-year increase of 1.5%; The total export sales volume was 548.4 billion yen (about 43.32 billion yuan), an increase of 37.7% year-on-year.
From the sales of nine different models and parts, in the first quarter of 2022, the hydraulic crusher (hammer) became the product with the highest year-on-year increase with a growth rate of 21.2%, while the hydraulic excavator became the best model in Japan with a sales of 81.5 billion yen (about 4.29 billion yuan) in the first quarter.
In addition, except for the year-on-year growth of 9.1% for hydraulic excavators, 7.2% for engineering cranes, 1.2% for concrete machinery and 4.8% for parts, the other four types of models (excluding small hydraulic excavators, with a year-on-year growth rate of 0) showed a negative growth mode.
In terms of export, in the first quarter of 2022, except for the negative growth (- 6.9%) of the export volume of piling machinery, the sales growth of other models of construction machinery increased in varying degrees. Among them, except for 8 different models and parts, other types of construction machinery increased the most year-on-year, 69.1%; In addition, the top three models with year-on-year growth were spare parts (67.0%), engineering hoisting machinery (66.6%) and hydraulic crusher (hammer) (51.1%).
In terms of export value, hydraulic excavator, with an export value of 208.9 billion yen (about 10.99 billion yuan), became the product with the highest export value of Japanese construction machinery in the first quarter of 2022.
Year on year growth of total sales in fy2021
Positive growth for the first time in three years
In fiscal year 2021 (from April 2021 to March 2022), the total sales of construction machinery in Japan was 2911.1 billion yen (about 153.12 billion yuan), a year-on-year increase of 31.5%, the first positive growth in three years. Domestic sales increased by 1.2% year-on-year to 997.9 billion yen (about 52.49 billion yuan); The export volume increased by 55.7% to 1913.2 billion yen (about 100.63 billion yuan). Among them, the year-on-year increase in domestic sales was corrected again after one year, and the export volume was corrected for the first time in three years.
In terms of domestic market, in fiscal year 2021, Japan's construction machinery hydraulic excavator increased by 2.7% year-on-year to 304.2 billion yen (about 16 billion yuan); Small hydraulic excavators increased by 0.3% year-on-year to 86.6 billion yen (about 4.56 billion yuan); Concrete machinery increased by 3.6% year-on-year to 32.6 billion yen (about 1.71 billion yuan); Hydraulic crusher (hammer) increased by 17.6% year-on-year to 22.6 billion yen (about 1.19 billion yuan); Other construction machinery increased by 0.2% year-on-year to 71.5 billion yen (about 3.76 billion yuan); Parts increased by 5.5% year-on-year to 132.1 billion yen (about 6.95 billion yuan). In addition, the year-on-year growth rate of other four types of models decreased to varying degrees.
In terms of export, in fiscal year 2021, only the export volume of piling machinery decreased (- 6.5%) year-on-year, and the sales of all other models and parts showed a sharp upward trend. Among them, shoveling machinery increased by 67.6% year-on-year to 216 billion yen (about 11.3 billion yuan); Hydraulic excavators increased by 50.6% year-on-year to 739.7 billion yen (about 38.69 billion yuan); Small hydraulic excavators increased by 44.4% year-on-year to 329.6 billion yen (about 17.23 billion yuan); Construction cranes increased by 42.0% year-on-year to 72 billion yen (about 3.77 billion yuan); Road machinery increased by 66.0% year-on-year to 35.8 billion yen (about 1.87 billion yuan); Concrete machinery increased by 29.9% year-on-year to 1.1 billion yen (about 50 million yuan); Hydraulic crusher increased by 64.6% year-on-year to 10.2 billion yen (about 5.33 billion yuan); Other construction machinery increased by 78.0% year-on-year to 256.7 billion yen (about 13.43 billion yuan); Parts increased by 62.9% year-on-year to 247.6 billion yen (about 12.95 billion yuan).
Geographically, among the nine regions with total exports, the export volume of the other eight regions showed an increasing trend, except that the export volume of China decreased. Among the three major export destinations (Asia, Europe and North America), North America's sales increased by 65.2% year-on-year, becoming the largest export destination.
CEMA predicts that the domestic sales of construction machinery in Japan will increase slightly in fiscal year 2022, and the export will also develop steadily. It is expected that the overall growth trend will be maintained for the second consecutive year.
