Ultra low emission transformation of iron and steel enterprises, with a cumulative investment of more than 150 billion yuan

Aug 30, 2022

In recent years, significant achievements have been made in energy conservation and emission reduction in the iron and steel industry. At the "2022 (13th) China steel energy conservation and emission reduction forum" held a few days ago, he Wenbo, Secretary of the Party committee and executive chairman of China Iron and Steel Industry Association, disclosed that the accumulated investment in ultra-low emission transformation of domestic steel enterprises has exceeded 150 billion yuan.

Realize pollution and carbon reduction

As for how to realize the coordinated development of pollution reduction and carbon reduction in the iron and steel industry, fan Tiejun, deputy secretary of the Party committee and President of the metallurgical industry planning and Research Institute, said that the iron and steel industry should seize the opportunities of layout optimization and adjustment, capacity replacement and upgrading, environmental protection relocation, etc., accelerate equipment upgrading and transformation, and achieve pollution reduction and carbon reduction from the root.

By the end of July, a total of 251 iron and steel enterprises in China had completed or were implementing ultra-low emission transformation with a crude steel production capacity of 681 million tons. In addition, a total of 189 iron and steel enterprises with 580 million tons of crude steel capacity are carrying out assessment and monitoring. He Wenbo disclosed that the accumulated investment in ultra-low emission transformation of domestic steel enterprises has exceeded 150 billion yuan.

Since 2022, affected by multiple factors, the overall benefits of the steel industry have declined significantly.

According to the data of China Iron and Steel Association, 63 of the 90 enterprises listed in the statistics of China Iron and Steel Association suffered losses in July, with a total loss of 13.2 billion yuan.

He Wenbo said that the decline in profits will have a certain impact on the enterprise's promotion of ultra-low emission transformation and other work. He suggested that the reward of the good and the punishment of the bad should be strengthened to promote the survival of the fittest. Fan Tiejun suggested that enterprises that have completed the transformation of ultra-low emissions should reduce energy consumption and material consumption to the maximum extent while stably realizing the requirements of ultra-low emissions, so as to reduce pollution, carbon, cost and efficiency.

Accelerate equipment upgrading

At present, the carbon emissions of the steel industry account for 15% of the total carbon emissions of the country. He Wenbo proposed to optimize and adjust the industrial structure, unswervingly promote ultra-low emission transformation, attach great importance to energy conservation and carbon reduction, plan and lead low-carbon transformation, actively plan industrial coordination, and make full use of intelligent control.

"We will accelerate the elimination of backward equipment and promote the upgrading and transformation of equipment." Fan Tiejun said that the scale of single blast furnace equipment, energy conservation and emission reduction, and green and low-carbon level should be continuously improved; Actively explore non blast furnace iron making, hydrogen metallurgy and other breakthrough low-carbon innovative processes to achieve high efficiency, high quality, low consumption and environmental protection of iron making process.

From the perspective of process flow of iron and steel industry, the effect of reducing pollution and carbon of electric furnace steel is obvious. In 2020, China's electric furnace steel output accounted for only 10.4% of the national steel output. According to the data of the metallurgical industry planning and Research Institute, the carbon emission per ton of steel in the short process can be reduced by 68% based on the average level. "With the further development of China's iron and steel industry and the gradual improvement of supporting conditions such as scrap steel resources and electric power, it is an inevitable trend to adjust the technological process structure of the iron and steel industry." Fan Tiejun told reporters.
