Hitachi Construction Machinery Unveils “Total Stroke Control” for ZX Series Excavators

Hitachi Construction Machinery has introduced the "Total Stroke Control" system for its ZX470LCH-5A and ZX690LCH-5A large excavators. In high-volume quarry loading applications, operators perform thousands of joystick movements per shift. Traditional hydraulic pilot systems have a fixed "gain" (sensitivity), meaning a small movement results in a large hydraulic flow. This requires the operator to make tiny, precise movements, leading to muscle fatigue.

The new system uses "Hall-Effect Sensors" in the pilot controllers (joysticks) instead of traditional potentiometers. These sensors measure the exact position of the joystick lever. The signal is processed by an "Electronic Pilot Controller." The engineering innovation is the "Adaptive Sensitivity Logic." The operator can choose between "Precision Mode" and "Power Mode" for the joystick response.

In "Precision Mode," the joystick movement is "soft" near the center. The system filters out micro-vibrations from the operator's hand. A 10% joystick deflection results in only 5% hydraulic flow, allowing for fine leveling work. In "Power Mode," the curve is linear and aggressive, allowing the operator to reach maximum flow with minimal lever travel, speeding up the loading cycle.

Furthermore, the system features "Motion Smoothing." When the operator moves the joystick rapidly from full forward to full reverse, the system intercepts the signal. Instead of an instant hydraulic shock, the system ramps the flow down and up over a 0.5-second window. This prevents the "jerk" that usually throws the operator forward in the seat, reducing back pain and improving long-term productivity.
