Sakai Manufacturing Co., Ltd. has introduced an advanced "Auto-Cornering" control system for its SW850N series tandem vibratory rollers. In urban road paving, operators frequently need to navigate tight corners and cul-de-sacs. However, running a high-frequency vibratory drum while turning creates a "shearing" force on the fresh asphalt. This force pushes the aggregate sideways, creating cracks and "scalloping" marks on the pavement surface.
The Auto-Cornering system integrates a "Solid-State Gyroscope" into the steering articulation joint. This sensor measures the articulation angle in real-time. The engineering logic is based on a "Threshold Curve." When the steering angle exceeds 15 degrees, the system recognizes that the machine is entering a turn. The controller instantly sends a signal to the vibration pump's "Electronic Proportional Valve," ramping down the vibration frequency from 50 Hz to 0 Hz smoothly over 2 seconds.
The key innovation is the "Resume Logic." When the operator straightens the steering wheel (angle drops below 10 degrees), the system automatically ramps the vibration back up. This eliminates the need for the operator to manually switch the vibration lever, preventing "human error" where vibration is left on during turns. Furthermore, the system features an "Asphalt Temperature Interlock." If the onboard infrared thermometer detects the asphalt temperature is below 90°C (compaction window closing), the system overrides the auto-cut logic to maximize compaction effort even in turns, prioritizing density over surface finish.
