Hyster-Yale Introduces “Dynamic Stability Control” for Heavy-Duty Container Handlers

Hyster-Yale Group has launched the "Dynamic Stability Control" (DSC) system for its H1050-1150HD heavy-duty container handlers. In busy ports, terminal surfaces are often uneven or rutted due to heavy traffic. When a container handler travels with a 40-ton container at high speed, crossing a rut can cause the machine to tilt dangerously, risking a tip-over.

The DSC system uses a high-precision "Inertial Measurement Unit" (IMU) mounted on the main chassis frame. This sensor measures the roll, pitch, and yaw rates at 100 times per second. The system calculates a "Stability Index" in real-time based on the load weight (from pressure sensors), the lift height, and the ground speed.

The core innovation is the "Intervention Logic." If the IMU detects a chassis tilt exceeding 3 degrees (the warning threshold), the system instantly activates a "Hydraulic Leveling Assist" on the rear axle suspension cylinders to counteract the lean. If the tilt exceeds 5 degrees (critical threshold), the system overrides the operator's throttle input, automatically reducing engine speed and applying the service brakes modulatingly to slow the machine down safely without jerking.

Furthermore, the system features "Corner Speed Optimization." When the driver turns the steering wheel, the system calculates the maximum safe speed for that turn radius and load weight. If the current speed is too high, the system automatically decelerates the machine to the safe speed limit. This active stability control allows port operators to maintain high productivity on rough terrain without compromising safety.
