Wirtgen Group Unveils “LEVEL PRO PLUS” Milling Depth Control System

Aug 12, 2026

Wirtgen GmbH has introduced the upgraded "LEVEL PRO PLUS" automatic leveling system for its W 200i and W 210i large milling machines. In rehabilitation projects, maintaining a precise milling depth is crucial to removing damaged pavement layers without damaging the underlying concrete base. Traditional systems use mechanical "skids" or shoes that slide on the ground, which can misread depth on rough or gravel surfaces.

The LEVEL PRO PLUS system uses four independent "Ultrasonic Sensors" mounted on the milling drum housing. These sensors emit high-frequency sound waves to measure the distance to the reference surface (ground level). The system processes this data 50 times per second.

The core engineering breakthrough is the "Multi-Point Curve Smoothing." The controller compares the data from the left and right sensors. If one sensor detects a localized pothole (an anomaly), the logic filters it out, preventing the machine from "copying" the hole. Instead, it mills a smooth, flat profile. Additionally, the system features "Concrete Bridge Deck Mode." When milling on concrete, the risk of "Gouging" (cutting too deep) is high due to the hard surface. The system monitors the "Milling Drum Load." If the load spikes (indicating the drum is hitting a hard aggregate or reinforcement), the system instantly raises the rear crawler track legs by 1-2 mm to reduce the cutting depth, protecting the rotor and gearbox. This intelligent depth control reduces tool wear by 20% and ensures a perfectly smooth substrate for the new asphalt layer.
