Shantui Construction Machinery Co., Ltd. has launched the "Intelligent Ripper Control" system for its DH-17 series bulldozers. In mining and road construction, the ripping process (breaking up hard ground) is highly dependent on operator skill. If the operator applies too much down-pressure on hard rock, the ripper shank can break. If too little pressure is applied on softer soil, productivity drops.
The new system integrates a "Strain Gauge Sensor" directly onto the ripper shank mounting pin. This sensor measures the mechanical stress (bending moment) on the shank in real-time. The data is fed into an ECU that controls the "Ripper Lift Cylinder." The system features an "Adaptive Down-Pressure Logic." When the system detects the shank stress approaching the yield limit of the material (e.g., hitting a buried boulder), it automatically commands the lift cylinder to retract slightly, relieving the load and preventing tool breakage.
Conversely, when the system detects low stress (indicating soft ground), it increases the down-pressure to maximize penetration depth. The engineering innovation is the "Pitch Angle Compensation." The system monitors the pitch angle of the bulldozer main frame (nose up or nose down). It automatically adjusts the ripper angle to ensure the shank enters the ground at the optimal 45-degree attack angle, regardless of the terrain slope. This automation reduces shank consumption costs by 40% and increases ripping productivity by 20%, allowing operators of varying experience levels to achieve consistent results.
