John Deere Extends SmartGrade Integration Across 772G/GP Motor Grader for 2026, Adding Predictive Grade-Assist and 6WD Traction Management

Oct 05, 2026

John Deere Construction & Forestry has finalized the 2026 rollout of its SmartGrade integrated 3D machine control across the 772G/GP motor grader line, consolidating the SmartGrade platform as a factory option rather than an aftermarket retrofit. The 772G/GP has long been a staple in municipal road maintenance, ditch shaping, and shoulder work - but the 2026 integration moves the machine from "grade assist" into true semi-automatic blade control, allowing the operator to specify a target cross slope, blade elevation, and side-shift offset, then hand the fine-grading corrections to the onboard controller while focusing on machine positioning and obstacle avoidance.

The engineering centerpiece is the "Predictive Grade-Assist" algorithm. Traditional grade-control systems react to blade-position error - measuring the cutting edge's deviation from the design surface and issuing a corrective command after the deviation has already appeared. SmartGrade on the 772G/GP instead incorporates a forward-looking algorithm that considers the grader's travel speed, the articulation angle, the front-wheel lean angle, and the blade's current slope to predict where the cutting edge will be at the next sample point. The controller then pre-positions the blade cylinders, circle, and side-shift before the deviation manifests - reducing grading overshoot and eliminating the telltale "staircase" texture that reactive grade-control systems leave on finished surfaces.

On the drivetrain side, the 772G/GP's optional 6WD (six-wheel-drive) configuration receives a new "Precision Traction Mode" that allows the operator to set a fixed travel speed via a dial switch rather than modulating the inching pedal. This decouples ground speed from engine RPM, allowing the machine to maintain consistent blade-loading speed on variable soil - soft clay in the morning, dry gravel in the afternoon - without the operator constantly adjusting throttle and brake inputs. Six-wheel-drive engagement can also be toggled on the fly, which means an operator transitioning from a paved shoulder to a soft dirt borrow pit does not have to stop the machine or cycle the transmission. Combined with the GP package's standard cross-slope, return-to-straight, and lever steering features, the 2026 772G/GP targets the municipal and county road contractor market that has historically depended on aftermarket grade-control retrofits and factory-installed joystick control options.
