SANY America has launched the SMHW40G5, its first purpose-built wheeled material handler for the North American market, targeting scrap yards, ports, recycling facilities, and bulk material operations. Powered by a Cummins B6.7 engine producing 168 kW (approximately 225 hp), the machine is equipped with SANY's "Electronically Controlled Positive-Flow Hydraulic System" - a control architecture in which the main pump's displacement is directly commanded by the electronic controller in response to joystick demand, delivering fast hydraulic response and precise control across the machine's full 59-foot maximum operating height.
The wheeled chassis provides excellent mobility between work areas - a significant productivity advantage in scrap yards and recycling facilities where the machine must reposition frequently as stockpiles are processed. The hydrostatic drive system enables smooth travel speed transitions without the shift-shock of mechanical transmissions, allowing operators to move between stockpile and truck-loading positions without disturbing the load in the grapple. The operator environment includes a heated and cooled seat, 360-degree camera with object detection (a feature SANY includes as standard, which competitors often charge extra for), auto-lube system, and integrated payload scale that logs each grapple's load weight for production reporting.
The positive-flow hydraulic architecture is particularly suited to material handling duty cycles: rather than relying on load-sensing valves that adjust pump output after the demand has been detected, the positive-flow system predicts the flow requirement from the joystick signal and pre-positions the pump displacement, delivering a snappier grapple response that reduces cycle time on high-frequency pick-and-place work. This architecture, combined with the machine's configurable loading equipment and reinforced undercarriage, positions the SMHW40G5 against established European and Japanese material handler brands at a competitive price point for mid-tier operations.
