Manitou Upgrades MT 1440 Telehandler with “Sky-Trace” Boom Path Replay and Predictive Load Chart Overlay

Oct 01, 2026

Manitou Group has announced the "Sky-Trace" enhanced load management system for its MT 1440 telehandler, targeting construction and industrial applications where operators routinely perform complex lifts at boom extensions approaching the machine's capacity limit. Traditional telehandler load moment indicators display the current load weight and the maximum permitted load at the current boom configuration-but they do not show the operator what would happen if the boom is extended another meter, rotated another 20 degrees, or raised another 2 meters. The operator must mentally interpolate between discrete chart positions, and errors in this interpolation are a leading cause of telehandler tip-overs.

The Sky-Trace system integrates "High-Resolution Angle Encoders" on each boom section's pivot pin, a "Boom Extension Length Sensor" on the telescoping stage, and a "Fork-Load Pressure Cell" in the carriage's tilt cylinder circuit. The engineering breakthrough is the "Predictive Path Replay." The system continuously samples the boom's current configuration-extension length, boom angle, and carriage load-and renders this data onto a 3D load-chart visualization displayed on the cab's panoramic monitor.

More critically, the system "pre-computes" the load chart for the boom's next 5 degrees of angle and 1 meter of extension. As the operator begins to extend or raise the boom, the display shows a live "capacity forecast"-a colored bar that transitions from green (adequate margin) through amber (approaching limit) to red (would exceed capacity at the projected boom position). If the operator attempts to move the boom into a position that would exceed capacity, the ECU blocks the specific hydraulic movement and displays the maximum permissible extension or angle for the current load. This predictive capacity visualization prevents the "last-meter-of-extension" tip-over incidents that frequently occur when operators push the machine toward its limit without realizing they have crossed the tipping threshold. The system also logs every lift cycle for post-operation analysis, providing fleet safety managers with detailed data on high-risk lift patterns.
