Toyota Material Handling Introduces “Fleet-Pulse” Real-Time Impact Telematics for Tonero Internal Combustion Forklifts

Oct 01, 2026

Toyota Material Handling has launched the "Fleet-Pulse" telematics system for its Tonero series internal combustion counterbalance forklifts, targeting multi-shift warehousing and distribution operations where hundreds of operators share a common fleet and damage accountability is difficult to assign. Traditional forklift damage tracking relies on the operator self-reporting collisions-an unreliable practice that results in damaged trucks remaining in service until catastrophic failures occur, and in untraceable repair costs that inflate fleet operating budgets.

The Fleet-Pulse system integrates a "Tri-Axial MEMS Accelerometer Array" mounted to the truck's counterweight and an "Impact Classification Algorithm" running on the onboard telematics controller. The engineering breakthrough is the "ML-Based Impact Severity Classification." The accelerometer samples the truck's acceleration at 500 hertz, detecting every shock event above a 0.5-G threshold. Each detected shock event's waveform is fed to a machine-learning classifier that distinguishes between routine operational shocks (fork insertion, driving over dock plates, crossing expansion joints) and true collision events (strikes against racking, structural impacts, pedestrian contact). The classifier has been trained on millions of acceleration waveforms and achieves a classification accuracy exceeding 95 percent.

When a true collision is detected, the system automatically logs the event with a timestamp, the operator ID (identified via the operator's access key), the truck's GPS position, the shock waveform, and the estimated impact energy. The system then triggers a workflow in the fleet management software: for minor impacts, the operator is prompted via the in-cab display to perform a quick visual check; for significant impacts, the truck's access is locked until a supervisor physically inspects the machine and unlocks it via their supervisor key. This automated accountability reduces unreported damage by 85 percent, enables data-driven operator training, and prevents damaged trucks from continuing to operate in a compromised state.
